It rests nearly 500 metres above sea level in a gentle valley to the west of Burgos castle, which overlooks the village. This is the smallest village in Goceano, with a population of 400. The settlement may have originated from a village located near the murei nuraghe, placed to watch over the Tirso valley from above. The village has had several names: Sperlato, Speralato, Sporlato. There are numerous nuraghic remains in addition to the murei: in particular, the Erismanzanu nuraghe, which has a perfectly preserved surrounding wall in trachyte blocks.
Annexed to the Torres Giudicato together with Burgos, Esporlato continues to show traces of its medieval past.
